Displayed beneath Roy's portrait is the Profile in Courage Award he received from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. "He got it for changing the flag," Marie says. "It was a courageous thing to do, and it cost him his job." The award takes its name from Kennedy's book about U.S. Senators "who risked their careers by taking principled stands for unpopular positions," according to the foundation's Web site.
